Almost every enquiry for the portrait and interview studio opens the same way: what do we actually get for the day? It is a fair question, because the phrase studio hire can mean an empty room or a finished production. Ours sits in between, and it is worth being exact about it.

You get a lit studio space with a camera and a crew to run it. That means the set is lit before you arrive, the camera is positioned and checked, and someone is responsible for picture and sound while you concentrate on the conversation. The room is arranged for interviews, presenter pieces and portrait sessions.

I look after the audio side, so I will describe that part most carefully below. First, here is the short version of what the day includes, so that nothing surprises anyone on the morning.

Producers sometimes ask whether they need to bring their own technician. In most cases they do not. The crew sets the camera framing, balances the key light against the background and checks that the guest looks natural rather than flat or over lit.

On the sound side, I place the microphone, set levels and listen on headphones throughout, because a good picture with poor sound is the first thing a viewer notices. If a guest shifts in their chair or a pipe knocks somewhere, I will tell the director quietly so a retake can be chosen at the right moment.

None of this needs to concern the person being interviewed. A calm room matters more than any piece of equipment, and our crews are briefed to keep the atmosphere unhurried, which tends to produce better answers than a rushed, technical one.

The most useful thing you can send us before the day is a short note on the purpose of the recording. Is it a conversation between two people, a single presenter speaking to camera, or a series of portraits? The answer changes how we seat people, how many microphones we use and how the light is built.

Please also tell us how many guests are coming and roughly how long each will sit. A guest who has never been filmed often needs ten minutes to settle, and we would rather plan for that than squeeze it out of the schedule.

If the programme has a house style, such as a particular colour of backdrop, a framing preference or a fixed lower third position, send it ahead. It is far easier to build the set to that style in the morning than to correct it after the first take.

Guests ask us what to wear more often than anything else. Plain, mid tone colours work best. Very fine stripes and tight checks can shimmer on camera, and pure white or deep black can make exposure harder. A jacket with a collar gives me an easy place to clip a lapel microphone.

Jewellery that moves or taps, such as bracelets or heavy necklaces, can create noise that is hard to remove later, so it is worth mentioning when you confirm the booking. Water is available, and we advise guests to avoid fizzy drinks just before recording.

Please ask guests to switch off their phones rather than silence them, since a vibrating phone can still be picked up by a microphone. These are small habits, but over a full day they save a surprising number of retakes.

It helps to be clear about the limits. The studio hire gives you a recorded interview or portrait session. It is not an editing service, and it does not include scripting or booking your guests. If you want footage cut and prepared for delivery, that falls under our workflow and post planning work and would be discussed separately.

Likewise, if a project grows into something larger, such as several cameras, a live feed or a full day of programmes, it is better to talk it through as a different kind of job rather than stretch a simple interview booking beyond its purpose.
