Five Workflow Planning Mistakes We See Before a Programme Reaches Air

Most delivery problems begin weeks before the shoot. These are the planning errors that cost producers time between ingest and playout, and the habits that prevent them.

1. Leaving the delivery spec until the edit

  • Ask for the written delivery spec during planning, not after the shoot
  • Record frame rate, audio layout and loudness target in one place
  • Note any assumption and the name of whoever agreed it

2. Underestimating ingest on a multi-camera day

  • Give ingest an owner rather than sharing it around
  • Verify every copy before any card is cleared
  • Agree the naming pattern before the first take

3. Treating graphics as a late addition

  • Collect and verify names and captions before the shoot
  • Test templates on the real playout chain
  • Route late changes through the same proofing step

4. Skipping a rehearsal of the playout chain

  • Run representative material through the whole chain
  • Check on the monitoring the operator will use
  • If time is short, test the riskiest element first

5. Documentation that exists only in one person's head

  • One short document covering paths, names, contacts and approvals
  • Read it aloud at the start of the day
  • Update it whenever the plan changes
